What the ban of UK family visa means for Indians

Starting January 2024, the UK, a traditionally popular destination, will no longer allow family members of non-research postgraduate students. This policy change has sparked a wave of re-evaluation amongst Indian families, prompting them to reconsider their options and explore alternative countries with friendlier dependent policies.

Will Canada, Australia, and the US become the new havens for Indian students seeking postgraduate dreams shattered by the UK's family visa ban?

Karunn Kandoi, Chief Experience Officer at ApplyBoard, highlights the potential deterrent this policy could pose, especially for families who prioritize keeping their loved ones together during studies. However, he also points out the relative brevity of UK postgraduate programs (around one year), potentially making the separation a less significant factor for some. Countries like Canada, Australia, and the US, with their flexible dependent policies and pathways to permanent residency, are emerging as attractive alternatives.

While the definition varies by country, it typically encompasses spouses, children under 18 (sometimes older), and occasionally parents or grandparents. Under the amended UK rules, dependants retain legal residence, work rights (for adults), NHS access, education for children, and travel freedom within the visa's validity period.

While the UK remains a popular choice, ApplyBoard data indicates softening demand due to the new policy. However, UK universities are actively releasing offers, making the application process faster and smoother.

Despite issuing the most dependent visas to Indians in 2021-22, the US's work restrictions for dependants could be a drawback.

Australia has witnessed a remarkable 136% increase in dependent visas issued to Indians, making it a rising contender. Its flexible policies and potential pathway to permanent residency are major draws.

Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) offers a clear path for students and their families to stay, gain work experience, and potentially pursue permanent residency, making it a highly attractive option.

The UK's policy change has undoubtedly influenced Indian students' study abroad plans. While the UK remains relevant for some, countries like Canada, Australia, and the US are gaining traction due to their flexible dependent policies and potential for permanent residency. As students navigate this evolving landscape, careful consideration of family needs and thorough research into alternative destinations are crucial for making an informed decision.(News Source)
