Description

Aga Khan University, established in 1983, is a nonprofit institution and a vital component of the Aga Khan Development Network. It holds the distinction of being Pakistan's inaugural private university. Beginning in the year 2000, the university extended its reach to encompass Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, the United Kingdom, and Afghanistan.

Initially, AKU was primarily dedicated to the field of health sciences and has since grown to become one of the largest private healthcare providers in Pakistan and East Africa. It's worth noting that AKU hospitals were the first in these regions to attain accreditation from the U.S.-based Joint Commission International.

In more recent times, the university has ventured into diverse academic domains, including teacher education, the study of Muslim civilizations, journalism, early childhood development, and public policy. Looking ahead, the university is preparing to launch an undergraduate liberal arts program with the goal of educating future leaders across a wide spectrum of disciplines, along with establishing additional graduate professional schools.
