Description

Established in 1998 as a Trust, the TERI School of Advanced Studies (TERI SAS) was founded with the primary objective of offering academic learning programs. Aligned with TERI, its sponsoring society, TERI SAS dedicated its efforts to crafting a range of learning initiatives intricately connected to the ongoing research on energy, environment, and sustainability conducted by TERI. The vision was to synergize the academic rigor brought by faculty members with the quality of TERI's application-focused research. Simultaneously, the cutting-edge research of TERI would consistently invigorate the curriculum of TERI SAS, enhancing its societal relevance. This reciprocal relationship aimed to fortify both institutes, amplifying their contributions to India and the global community.

This collaborative spirit is formalized in a memorandum of understanding between TERI SAS and TERI, outlining shared research infrastructure, collaborative research programs, joint studies, and mutual support for seminars, symposia, and conferences.

The university's purpose and vision received further validation in 1999 when it achieved "Deemed to be University" status from the University Grants Commission. This recognition, notified by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of Education, Government of India, on October 5, 1999 (notification no. F.9-19/95-U-3), solidified its commitment to delivering not only world-class education but also an environment fostering fresh perspectives. Regular interactions with researchers, scientists, and academicians have been integral to the university's ethos. The inaugural convocation took place on October 16, 2006, where 8 doctoral and 36 master's degrees were conferred. Mr. Nandan Nilekani, CEO and MD of Infosys Technologies, delivered the convocation address, emphasizing the importance of sustainable development and its integration into higher education.
