Description

The emblem of St. Xavier's University in Kolkata draws its inspiration from the Jassu Crest of the university's patron, Saint Francis Xavier's family. This emblem has been thoughtfully adapted to reflect the local surroundings, infusing it with a distinctly Indian flavor.

The shield, adorned in white and blue, features a tiger and a palm tree, both of which are icons representing the region. Above them, a silver crescent moon symbolizes Xavier's palacio. On the right side, the emblem bears the inscription "IHS," signifying the University's affiliation with the Society of Jesus (Iesus Hominum Salvator - Jesus, Savior of the Human Family). The checkered pattern in silver and black at the base pays homage to the Xaverian heritage.

Surrounding the shield is a garter bearing the words "St. Xavier's University, Kolkata," and atop it stands a Cross emitting holy rays. Below, a scroll is inscribed with the motto of the University, "Nihil Ultra" (Nothing Beyond).

In its entirety, the Crest embodies qualities of dignity, courage, quiet radiance, and the pursuit of higher aspirations—a constant reminder of the University's commitment to reaching for greater heights.
