Description
The inception of the Agricultural Institute dates back to 1910 under the visionary leadership of Dr. Sam Higginbottom. Established as an ecumenical institution of the Christian Churches and Church organizations in India, Dr. Sam Higginbottom arrived in the country in 1903, joining the North India Mission of the Presbyterian Church. During the period from 1903 to 1909, he served as a professor of economics and science at the Allahabad Christian College (now Ewing Christian College) while immersing himself in the study of the local dialect. Over this time, he became a well-known figure in the surrounding villages.
Driven by a deep concern for the living conditions of the villagers and the antiquated agricultural practices contributing to low productivity and extreme poverty, Dr. Higginbottom was inspired to address these issues. He also noted the significant gap between urban Christians and rural masses. After months of contemplation, by the end of 1909, he decided to establish an agricultural school. His vision for this school was to educate village boys, introduce improved agricultural methods, and collaborate with local farmers to solve practical agricultural problems.
Simultaneously, Dr. Higginbottom took on the responsibility of supervising a home for lepers previously operated by the Allahabad Charitable Association. Due to inadequate facilities at the home, the lepers faced challenges in obtaining food, clothing, and shelter, often prompting them to leave and wander into the city as beggars.
