Description
Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences University was founded on September 29, 2003, under Section (3) of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act 1956, as per the notification No. F.9-11/2000-U-3 issued by the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development. The genesis of this institution traces back to the visionary Padmashree Dr. Vitthalrao Vikhe Patil, the founder of the Cooperative movement in India, and Padmabhushan Dr. Balasaheb Vikhe Patil, Former Union Minister, and Distinguished Parliamentarian, who established the parent organization, Pravara Medical Trust, in 1972 in the remote village of Loni in Ahmednagar District, Maharashtra State.
In 1976, the Trust initiated primary and secondary level medical care for the remote rural and tribal population in the region, inaugurating the Padmashree Dr. Vitthalrao Vikhe Patil Pravara Rural Hospital with 100 beds. Over the years, this hospital has evolved into a 1275-bed, multidisciplinary, superspeciality medical institute equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Presently, the hospital caters to approximately 1 million cases annually.
The hospital is committed to delivering comprehensive integrated healthcare to the rural and tribal communities in the region, incorporating the Indian System of Medicine.
Under the leadership of Dr. Rajendra E Vikhe Patil, Chairman of Pravara Medical Trust and President of Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences Trust, the hospital received recognition in 2015 as the Best Hospital for Providing Healthcare to Senior Citizens by the Government of India. Dr. Rajendra E Vikhe Patil was honored with this award by the late Shri Pranab Mukherjee, the then President of India.
