Description
The Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology was established in 1998 under the name Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women, paying homage to the social reformers Periyar and Annai E. V. R. Maniammai. Initially affiliated with Bharathidasan University, the college shifted to Anna University in 2001. In 2007, it achieved deemed-to-be-university status and was rechristened as Periyar Maniammai University. In 2010, the institution faced controversy, being listed among the fake universities in India, and was among the 44 institutions slated to lose deemed university status. This led to student protests and unrest. The Supreme Court intervened, temporarily halting the decision, and the matter remained unresolved until 2014.
In 2017, responding to the University Grants Commission's directive to 123 institutes not to use "university" in the title of deemed universities, the institution underwent another name change to become the Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology. Notably, it has never been ranked or received a position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework ranking by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
