Description

The National Medical Commission (NMC) is a regulatory body consisting of 33 members in India. It holds the authority to oversee medical education and regulate the conduct of medical professionals. On September 25, 2020, it succeeded the Medical Council of India. The NMC is responsible for various critical functions, including recognizing medical qualifications, accrediting medical institutions, registering medical practitioners, and conducting oversight of medical practices while evaluating the healthcare infrastructure in India.

Initially, the NMC was established for a period of six months through an ordinance issued in January 2019. Subsequently, it was solidified as a permanent law after being passed by the Parliament of India and receiving approval from the President on August 8, 2019.

NITI Aayog proposed the substitution of the Medical Council of India (MCI) with the National Medical Commission (NMC). The NMC bill was endorsed by the Parliament and received the President's approval on August 8, 2019.

In early 2019, an ordinance was enacted, replacing the Medical Council of India with the National Medical Commission. This ordinance was issued by the President of India in January 2019.

Starting in July 2017, the Supreme Court granted permission to the Central Government to replace the medical council. A team of five specialized doctors was appointed to oversee the medical education system in India.

The Planning Commission endorsed the transition from the Medical Council of India (MCI) to the National Medical Commission (NMC). Following widespread approval from most states and the subsequent approval of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the proposal was presented as a final bill in parliamentary sessions by the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Harsh Vardhan. The bill was successfully passed by both houses of Parliament in 2019. On August 8, 2019, the President of India formally sanctioned the National Medical Commission Bill 2019, enacting it into law.
