Description
The Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, an initiative of the Government of India under the Ministry of Ayush, has a crucial mission to foster the yoga culture and propagate its philosophy across the country. Established in 1970 initially as a hospital under the defunct Central Council for Research in Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy, operating under the Vishwayatan Yogashram, it later evolved into the Central Research Institute for Yoga (CRIY) in 1976. The primary objectives were to offer free training to individuals and conduct research on yoga.
In 1988, the institute underwent a significant transformation, being rechristened as the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), expanding its scope and mandates. Currently operating under the Ministry of Ayush, MDNIY plays a pivotal role in promoting yoga philosophy, providing training, and conducting advanced research in the field. An annual event, the Yoga Mahotsav, has been organized by MDNIY since 2016, serving as a prelude to the International Day of Yoga (IDY) and raising awareness about the celebration of IDY.
Moreover, MDNIY has actively contributed to IDY by preparing the Common Yoga Protocol and Yoga DVD for the event, collaborating with distinguished yoga experts and government officials from various ministries. The institute's commitment to advancing yoga education and research aligns with its overarching goal of spreading the essence of yoga across the nation.
