Description
The Ministry of Education (MoE) is a governmental department in India responsible for the implementation of the National Policy on Education. This ministry is further structured into two distinct departments:
-
The Department of School Education and Literacy, which oversees primary, secondary, and higher secondary education, adult education and literacy.
-
The Department of Higher Education, which is responsible for university-level education, technical education, scholarships, and related matters.
The current Education Minister is Dharmendra Pradhan, who is a member of the Council of Ministers. India has had a Ministry of Education since its independence in 1947. In 1985, during the Rajiv Gandhi government, the ministry's name was changed to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). However, with the introduction of the "National Education Policy 2020" by the Narendra Modi government, the Ministry of Human Resource Development was reverted to its original name, the Ministry of Education.
