Description
Kerala Kalamandalam, inaugurated in November 1930 at Kakkad house in Kunnamkulam, initially operated for six months before being relocated to Ambalapuram near Mulangunnathukavu. Subsequently, in 1936, the institution found its permanent home in the village of Cheruthuruthy, just south of Shoranur. The Maharaja of Cochin generously donated the land and a building to facilitate this move, and a dance department was established to revive Mohiniyattom.
Functioning as a grant-in-aid institution under the Cultural Affairs Department, Government of Kerala, Kerala Kalamandalam achieved a significant milestone in 2006 when it was designated a 'Deemed University for Art and Culture' by the Government of India. In 2010, the University Grants Commission (India) bestowed upon Kerala Kalamandalam the prestigious 'A' category status, making it the only deemed university in the state of Kerala to attain this recognition.
