K.L.E. Academy of Higher Education and Research

The institution aspires to rank among the top ten medical colleges in India in the fields of medical education, research, and healthcare services. Complementing this objective is the 1000-bed Dr. Prabhakar Kore Charitable Hospital, along with three Primary Health Centres and one urban Health Centre, serving as focal points for postgraduate and undergraduate training. These facilities, exclusively designated for training purposes, provide free treatment to patients, fostering the development of essential knowledge and skills in trainees.

The severe lack of medical facilities in the region prompted the KLE Society to establish Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Belgaum in 1963. The college, a testament to the high professional standards envisioned by the KLE Society, was founded under the guidance of the late Dr. B.S. Jirge, the Founder Dean. Eminent medical educationists, the late Dr. B.S. Desai and Dr. M. Basavaraj Urs, served as principals during the inaugural decade.

In 1971, Dr. S.G. Desai assumed leadership, and his tenure between 1971 and 1985 was distinguished by the establishment of high standards in discipline, decorum, and academic excellence.

Dr. H.B. Rajshekhar took on the role of principal in 1985, overseeing substantial growth in infrastructure and learning resources. His contributions extended to the development of KLE Hospital and MRC, the Department of Medical Education, Digital Library, and collaborations with the University of Illinois, USA. Emphasizing student welfare and support amenities, he played a pivotal role in realizing these ideas during his tenure.
