The inception of Jamia Hamdard traces back to the establishment of a modest Unani clinic in 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed, a distinguished practitioner of the Unani System of Medicine during his era. Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed aspired to elevate the practice of Unani Medicine to a scientific discipline, aiming for a more effective dispensation of Unani medicines to patients. He christened his initiative as "Hamdard," signifying "sympathy for all and sharing of pain." The legacy and vision were perpetuated by his eminent son, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, who continued to champion the philosophy and objectives of Hamdard in independent India.
Even during the partition of India in 1947, Hakeem Abdul Hameed harbored ambitions of establishing a comprehensive network of educational institutions. These institutions would focus on showcasing the contributions of Islam and Islamic culture to Indian civilization, alongside the development of Unani medicines for the treatment of diseases.
