Description

The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) functions as a regional Institute for Training and Research in Population Studies within the ESCAP region. Originally established in Mumbai in July 1956, it underwent name changes, initially known as the Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC) until July 1970 and later as the International Institute for Population Studies (IIPS) until 1985. The institute was officially re-designated in 1985 to its current title to accommodate the expansion of its academic activities. It was declared a 'Deemed to be University' on August 19, 1985, under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. This recognition empowered the institute to confer degrees and facilitated its growth as an academic institution.

Commencing in 1956 with joint sponsorship from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, the Government of India, and the United Nations, IIPS has emerged as the premier institute for training and research in Population Studies, particularly for developing countries in the Asia and Pacific region. Distinguished as the first regional center of its kind, IIPS serves a broader population compared to other regional centers. The institute operates under the administrative control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
