Description

The Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) stands as an advanced research institution, established and fully funded by the Reserve Bank of India, dedicated to the comprehensive exploration of developmental issues across various disciplines.

Formally registered as an autonomous society on November 14, 1986, and later as a public trust in January 1987, IGIDR's campus was inaugurated on December 28, 1987, by the then Prime Minister of India, Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi. Subsequently, the institute attained recognition as a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act.

Initially conceived as a research-centric entity, IGIDR evolved into a fully integrated teaching and research organization by introducing a Ph.D. program in development studies in 1990. The primary goal of this Ph.D. program is to nurture researchers with diverse disciplinary backgrounds capable of addressing issues spanning economics, energy, and environmental policies. In 1995, the institute expanded its academic offerings with the initiation of the M. Phil program, and in 2003, it introduced the M.Sc. program, aiming to expose students to the realm of research at an earlier stage of their academic journey.

Currently, IGIDR boasts a dedicated team of approximately 188 individuals, including 26 full-time faculty members, 22 non-academic staff, and around 140 students pursuing M.Sc., M.Phil, and Ph.D. programs.
