Description
Established in 1889 at Pune, the Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory (IBL) initially had Dr. Alfred Lingard at its helm as the laboratory's In-charge in 1890. Recognizing the potential hazards of handling highly infectious micro-organisms and pathological materials in the densely populated city of Pune, a decision was made to relocate the laboratory in 1893.
The laboratory found its new home in an isolated site amidst the dense conifer forest of Mukteswar in the Kumaon hills of the United Province, situated approximately 1500 meters above the mean sea level. This strategic move was prompted by the need for a safer environment to conduct research.
During its early years, the IBL focused its efforts on combating cattle plague or rinderpest, which was a highly devastating disease at that time. The institute prioritized initiatives aimed at controlling and mitigating the impact of this deadly disease.
