Description
Established on December 27, 1956, the Indian Law Institute (ILI) stands as an international center for advanced socio-legal research, making significant contributions to the realms of legal research, education, and training. Functioning as an autonomous body, ILI is registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 (No. S. 1049 of 1956-57).
Formally inaugurated on December 12, 1957, by the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, at the Central Hall of Parliament, New Delhi, the event was graced by the presence of the first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Hon’ble Mr. Justice S.R. Das (the then Chief Justice of India), and late Dr. K.M. Munshi (the then Executive Chairman of the Institute), along with Prof. L.R. Siva Subramanian (the then Dean, Law Faculty of Delhi University).
During the inauguration, Pt. Nehru lauded the Institute's establishment as necessary and important. He expressed his belief that ILI would play a crucial role in fostering empirical research, utilizing law as an instrument of social engineering, and addressing contemporary legal issues. Pt. Nehru emphasized the essential task ILI would undertake in contributing to the development of a welfare state.
