Indian Institute of Science

Established in 1909 through a visionary collaboration involving industrialist Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the Mysore royal family, and the Government of India, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has, over the past 111 years, evolved into India's foremost institution for advanced scientific and technological research and education.

Guided by the mandate "to provide for advanced instruction and to conduct original investigations in all branches of knowledge as are likely to promote the material and industrial welfare of India," IISc has endeavored to strike a harmonious balance between the pursuit of fundamental knowledge and the practical application of research for the benefit of industry and society.

Renowned for its stature and excellence, IISc consistently attracts the brightest young faculty members, who have received training in premier laboratories worldwide. Recognizing its eminence, the Government of India designated IISc as an Institution of Eminence (IoE) in 2018. The institute consistently ranks among the top institutions in global university assessments.

Distinguished by its diverse and interdisciplinary research output that transcends conventional boundaries, IISc encompasses over 42 academic departments and centers organized into six divisions. Emphasizing both research and education, the institute hosts approximately 4000 students engaged in various postgraduate and Ph.D. programs, alongside a dedicated four-year undergraduate program designed to impart research-oriented training to young students in the fundamental sciences.
