Description
Founded by Mahatma Gandhi on October 18, 1920, Gujarat Vidyapith attained deemed university status in 1963. Financed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for higher education programs, it originated as Rashtriya Vidyapith (National Institute of University Education) during the Non-cooperative Movement. Throughout its existence, Mahatma Gandhi served as its lifelong Kulpati (Chancellor).
Gujarat Vidyapith adopts an integrated education system, encompassing teaching from Nursery to the Doctorate level. The primary goal is to cultivate individuals of character, ability, culture, and dedication, equipped to lead movements aligned with the ideals espoused by Mahatma Gandhi for the country's regeneration. The guiding principles of this integrated education system, covering Nursery & Basic Schools, Higher Secondary, and Bachelor's to Doctorate-level degrees across various disciplines, include:
- Adherence to truth and non-violence
- Participation in productive work with a sense of dignity of labor
- Acceptance of the equality of religions
- Priority for the needs of village dwellers in all curricula
- Use of the mother tongue as a medium of instruction.
