Description

The Dental Council of India was established in compliance with The Dentists Act of 1948 to oversee dental education and the dental profession nationwide. Its funding is provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as well as contributions from local state dental councils. The formation of the Dental Council of India was facilitated by an act of parliament, 'The Dentists Act 1948' (XVI of 1948), with the primary objective of regulating dental education, the dental profession, and ethical standards. This council officially commenced its operations in March 1949.

The Council comprises six constituencies, each representing the Central Government, State Government, Universities, Dental Colleges, the Medical Council of India, and Private Practitioners of Dentistry. The Director-General of Health Services holds an Ex-Officio position on both the Executive Committee and General Body. The Council members themselves elect the President, Vice-President, and members of the Executive Committee. The elected President and Vice-President serve as the Ex-Officio Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee, which serves as the governing body overseeing all procedural, financial, and day-to-day activities and affairs of the Council.

The primary source of the Council's financial support is grants from the Government of India, specifically the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (Department of Health). Additionally, the Council derives income from various sources, including a 1/4th share of fees collected annually by State Dental Councils under Section 53 of the Dentists Act, inspection fees from dental institutions subject to inspection under Section 15 of the Dentists Act, 1948, and application fees from organizations seeking permission to establish new Dental Colleges, introduce advanced courses of study, and increase admission capacity in Dental Colleges under Section 10A of the Dentists Act, 1948, as amended by the Dentists (Amendment) Act, 1993.
