Deccan College Postgraduate & Research Institute

The Deccan College, Post-Graduate and Research Institute in Pune holds the distinction of being the third oldest educational institute in India. Originating as the Hindoo College on October 6, 1821, it was established by the Bombay Presidency Government under the leadership of Governor Mountstuart Elphinstone. Utilizing the Dakshina Fund initiated by Maratha Sardar Khanderao Dabhade and continued by the Peshwas for Sanskrit studies, the college flourished and evolved into a prominent institution for higher learning and research.

Over time, the college underwent name changes, first becoming the Poona College on June 7, 1851, and later adopting the name Deccan College in October 1864. The campus was relocated to a new area spanning 115 acres near Yerawada on March 23, 1868. With a generous grant of Rs. 1 lakh from Sir Jamsetji Jejeebhoy, the main building was constructed in elegant Gothic architecture.

Throughout its history, Deccan College has produced accomplished individuals who have excelled in various fields. Notable figures include Sir Ramlkrishna Gopal Bhandarkar, the celebrated Indologist; Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the prominent nationalist leader; Gurudev Ramchandra Dattratreya Ranade, the eminent philosopher; Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, the influential social reformer; Vishwanath Kashinath Rajawade, the renowned historian; and Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis, the distinguished Indian medical practitioner who served commendably in China.

Although the British Government closed the college in 1934, it was successfully reopened on August 17, 1939, as the Deccan College, Post-Graduate and Research Institute, through a Transfer Deed passed by the Hon'ble Bombay High Court. The university's Past Students Association has been actively involved in its growth and development, contributing to the institution's enduring legacy.
