Established in 1989 as part of the SPIC Science Foundation and initially funded by the SPIC group in Chennai, the Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) has evolved into a distinguished center for excellence in teaching and research within the mathematical sciences. Since 1996, it has functioned as an autonomous institution, managed by a Governing Council comprised of eminent individuals. CMI stands out as a noteworthy example of a public-private partnership in the realms of research and education in India. The institute is a recipient of substantial private funding, complemented by significant financial support from the Government of India.
CMI's primary areas of research include Mathematics, Computer Science, and Physics. Alongside a dynamic PhD program, the institute offers BSc programs in Mathematics and Computer Science, as well as Mathematics and Physics. Additionally, CMI provides MSc programs in Mathematics, Applications of Mathematics, and Computer Science, contributing to its multifaceted approach to education and research in the mathematical sciences.
