Description
Established in 1967 in Sarnath, Varanasi, India, the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS; Tibetan: ཝ་ཎ་མཐོ་སློབ, Wylie: wa Na mtho slob), formerly known as the Central University for Tibetan Studies (CUTS), operates as a Deemed University and functions as an autonomous organization under the Union Ministry of Culture. Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, in consultation with Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, founded CIHTS with the primary objectives of providing education to Tibetan youths in exile, catering to Himalayan border students, and undertaking the task of retranslating lost Indo-Buddhist Sanskrit texts, currently existing only in Tibetan, into Sanskrit, Hindi, and other contemporary Indian languages.
