Description

The introduction of Homeopathy in India is intricately tied to the efforts of Dr. Honigberger, a French individual credited with bringing this therapeutic approach to the country. Dr. Honigberger served at the Court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and arrived in Lahore around 1829-1830. His noteworthy success in treating Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who was suffering from paralysis of the vocal cords and swelling of the feet, marked a turning point in 1839. Traditional native physicians had been unable to improve the Maharaja's health. Following this, Dr. Honigberger moved to Calcutta, where he commenced his practice, earning the moniker of the 'Cholera Doctor.'

The practice of Homeopathy gained traction in India during the lifetime of Dr. Hahnemann, the founder of Homeopathy. In approximately 1810, a German physician and geologist who came to India for geological investigations spent some time in Bengal, distributing homeopathic medicine among the people.

Dr. Mahendra Lal Sircar, the first qualified physician in India, played a pivotal role in popularizing Homeopathy. Inspired by the influence of lay-homeopath Babu Rajen Datta, Dr. Sircar successfully treated notable individuals of his time, including Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar and Raja Radha Kanta Deb Bahadur. Dr. Sircar's efforts significantly contributed to the widespread recognition and fame of Homeopathy across India, leading to an increasing number of people seeking homeopathic treatment for various ailments.
