The Council of Architecture is a statutory body established by the Government of India in agreement with the terms of the Engineers Act, 1972, which was approved by the Indian Parliament and entered into effect on September 1, 1972.

The Act mandates the registration of architects, as well as educational standards, recognized qualifications, and standards of practice that must be met by practicing architects. The Council of Architecture is responsible for regulating architectural education and practice throughout India, as well as maintaining the architects' registry. ABOUT COA

The Government of India formed the Council of Architecture( COA) in compliance with the criteria of the Engineers Act, 1972, which was passed by the Parliament of India and entered into force on September 1, 1972.

The Architects (Professional Conduct) Regulations, 1989 (as revised in 2003), govern the practice of an architect in terms of professional ethics and etiquette, conditions of engagement and scale of charges, architectural competition criteria, and so on. The Council of Architecture has developed regulations governing the many facets of practice by these Regulations. Any infringement of the regulations of professional behavior for architects will be considered professional misconduct and subject to the disciplinary measures outlined in section 30 of the Architects Act of 1972.

In India, there are roughly 423 institutions that provide architectural education leading to recognized qualifications. The Council of Architecture (Minimum Standards of Architectural Education) Regulations, 1983, which outline the requirements for admission, course duration, standards of staff & accommodations, course content, examination, etc., various institutions (constituent colleges/departments of universities, deemed universities, affiliated colleges/schools, IITs, NITs, and autonomous institutions) set the educational standards that are offered.  Source

ROLE OF THE COUNCIL OF ARCHITECTURE

• The council creates and updates an Indian architect registration.

• Along with managing the registry of architects, the Council of Architecture is responsible for regulating professional training and practice across India.

• The COA establishes minimal architectural education standards.

• The COA advises that architectural institutions in India be recognized.

• The COA may also request the government to revoke the institution's recognition.

• The COA regulates the architectural profession.

• The COA has the authority to enact laws.

• The COA selects additional officers and workers as needed to carry out the duties.

• The COA supervises and manages the finances.

FUNCTIONS

The Council of Architecture (COA) is in charge of: 

• Keeping the Architects' Register up to date. Anyone interested in pursuing a career in architecture must register with the Council of Architecture (COA).

• Keeping the Central Government abreast of the institutions' criteria of performance.

• Makes recommendations to the Government of India on qualification recognition and derecognition.

CONCLUSION
