The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) is a recognized society under the Societies Registration Act of 1860, comprising Indian Universities as its members. Administrators and academicians from member universities can use it as a forum to exchange ideas and talk about issues that are important to both of them. 

It primarily focuses on the recognition of degrees and diplomas granted by Indian universities that have been approved by the UGC in New Delhi and other countries to be admitted to higher degree programs at Indian universities.

Much as it relates to the recognition of foreign qualifications, the AIU is also an implementing agency for the agreements reached under the Cultural Exchange Programmes carried out between India and other nations in the sphere of education (except for medicine and allied courses).

History of the Association of Indian Universities

The notion of bringing all universities together on the same platform arose during the deliberations of a conference of Vice Chancellors of Universities hosted by Lord Reading, the then Viceroy of India, in Shimla in 1924. The AIU was established in our country in response to the recommendations of the Saddler committee in 1917.

On March 23, 1925, the Inter-University Board (IUB) of India was subsequently established to further university operations through information exchange and collaborative efforts in the fields of education, culture, sports, and related fields.

In 1967, the Inter-university Board registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act of 1860, giving it legal standing. It adopted its current name, The Association of Indian Universities, in 1973. (AIU).

Role of AIU

  • To perform the role of an intercollegiate organization.

  • To serve as a clearinghouse for information and to promote university-to-university collaboration, communication, and mutual consultation.

  • To act as a point of contact between the government (both the federal and state governments) and the universities and to work with other university boards on a national or worldwide level to collaborate on issues of shared interest.

  • To serve as the Indian universities' envoy.

  • To promote or carry out such programs as would help in an institution, examination, research, textbooks, scholarships, publications, and library organizations that assist in the advancement and dissemination of knowledge.

  • To assist universities in maintaining their autonomy.

  • To facilitate the exchange of teaching and research workers.

  • To assist universities in acquiring accreditation for their degrees, and examinations from both Indian and foreign universities.

  • To plan, organize, and facilitate conferences, seminars, workshops, lectures, and research on diverse higher education topics.

  • To create and manage a sports organization to foster goodwill between the member universities.

  • To serve as a service agency to universities in any way that is required or prescribed.

  • To build and sustain organizations that provide youth welfare services, cultural programs, adult education, and other activities that benefit and benefit students.

  • To perform the facilitation and provision of newsletter papers, books, and journals for publishing.

  • To promote digitalization and offer value to its member universities through the Admission Portal. Job and collaboration portals to promote high-quality higher education.

Functions of AIU in the Indian education system

  • Affiliation

Universities founded by state and federal legislation are granted affiliation by the Association of Indian Universities. If the Association feels that a particular university's standards are not appropriate, it reserves the power to refuse affiliation. The Association assists Indian students who want to study abroad by validating the reputation of the prospective university. As a result, it keeps up good relations with international universities.

  • Exchange of views

The Association serves as a forum for vice-chancellors to meet and discuss issues relevant to the educational system, curriculum, admissions, examination system, research projects, etc. to implement appropriate reforms in the higher education sector.

  • Coordination

The Association develops effective communication, cooperation, and coordination among the universities. Additionally, it aids in providing efficient amenities.

  • Information Bureau

The Association also functions as an information bureau, providing call universities with genuine and accurate information about new initiatives, adjustments, and reforms being made in the higher education sector. Additionally, it is beneficial to enlighten Indian students about the facilities offered by international universities.

  • Platform for problem-solving

The Association offers a forum for debating university issues, looking for solutions, and assisting with their implementation in universities. It is a forum where all vice-chancellors gather to talk about academic issues and develop a shared policy that will be put into practice in the future. An essential organization that aids in the growth and advancement of higher education is the Association of Indian Universities. It serves as the government's core organization.
