The Dental Council of India is a Statutory Body established under an Act of Parliament, namely the Dentists Act, 1948 (XVI of 1948), to regulate Dental Education and the profession of Dentistry throughout India. It is funded by the Government of India through the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (Department of Health). 

The Council is composed of six constituencies, which represent the Central Government, State Governments, Universities, Dental Colleges, the Medical Council of India, and Private Practitioners of Dentistry. An Ex-Officio member of both the Executive Committee and the General Body is the Director-General of Health Services.

The President, Vice-President, and members of the Executive Committee are chosen by the Council. The Ex-Officio Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee are the elected President and Vice-President. This organization's governing body, the Executive Committee, is in charge of all procedural, financial, and day-to-day operations and affairs of the Council.

The Council is primarily supported by grants from the Government of India's Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (Dept. of Health), but it also receives a quarter of the fees collected annually by various State Dental Councils under Section 53 of the Dentists Act, as well as inspection fees from various dental institutions under Section 15 of the 1948 Dentists Act, and application fees from organizations seeking permission to establish new dental practices.
